East London Hockey Club marks 35th anniversary with thrilling President’s XI v Chair’s XI match

East London Hockey Club celebrated its 35th anniversary in memorable style yesterday with a special fixture between a President’s XI and a Chair’s XI at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The match brought together players from across the club’s history, alongside current members from its eight men’s and eight women’s teams, in front of a lively crowd of supporters.

The game produced a dramatic finish. The Chair’s XI built a strong lead and looked set to claim the day, but the President’s XI responded with determination, bringing the score level in the final stages. A last-minute strike secured a 4–3 victory for the President’s team.

Founded in the early 1990s as a Metropolitan Police team, East London Hockey Club has grown into one of London’s most active hockey communities. It now fields multiple men’s and women’s teams, runs youth programmes, and offers opportunities for players of all levels. Over the years, it has built a reputation for competitive hockey and for providing an environment where players can enjoy the sport and form lasting connections.

Yesterday’s fixture highlighted the club’s history and reach. Former players returned to the pitch, reconnecting with teammates and sharing memories from early matches and tournaments. Current members brought energy and skill, blending with alumni to create a unique atmosphere. The stands were filled with cheering, laughter, and stories from across the decades. For many, the match was a chance to reconnect with friends who had shaped their experience at East London Hockey Club.

Club President Roger Lilleystone, who led the President’s XI to victory, reflected on the occasion:

“For 35 years, East London Hockey Club has built a legacy measured not just in matches played or goals scored, but in friendships formed and memories created. Yesterday’s match was a vivid reminder of that achievement.”

Club Chair Alex Reeves commented,

“The match was a great way to celebrate our 35th Anniversary, bringing together so many people who love this club. I’m very proud to be a member and lead the Committee.”

Based at Lee Valley, one of the country’s premier hockey venues, East London Hockey Club continues to attract players from across the London area. The club offers competitive fixtures and development opportunities while maintaining a strong social element. Its youth programmes introduce hockey to new generations and provide a platform for skill development and teamwork. The anniversary match reflected the club’s commitment to both performance and inclusivity.

The 35th anniversary match is one of several celebratory events marking this milestone. The club hopes these occasions will inspire more people to join, whether as players, coaches, volunteers, or supporters. East London Hockey Club invites anyone interested in being part of its community to get involved and help shape the next chapter of its story.
