Who are police trying to trace?

As reported by the Metropolitan Police, detectives are seeking to speak to Cavalli Harriott, 22, from Hackney, and Jayqwan Stevens-Burke, 23, who frequents both Hackney and Grays in Essex, in connection with the case. The force said the pair are being treated as people of interest as part of the ongoing investigation.

The appeal came after officers said they were continuing extensive enquiries to build up a picture of what happened on the afternoon of the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams said police were urging anyone who knows the whereabouts of either man to come forward.

What happened on Andre Street?

The Metropolitan Police said the investigation began after a fatal stabbing on Andre Street, Hackney, on Monday, 13 July.

In the earlier force statement, police said they were called to the area at 13:42hrs after reports of a stabbing and that enquiries were ongoing.

The Met later confirmed that detectives were appealing for information about two suspects seen running from the scene along Anton Street towards Sandringham Road in connection with the killing. Police have not said in the statement that any arrests had been made in relation to the latest appeal.

What did police say in their appeal?

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams said officers were carrying out extensive enquiries to establish what happened and asked the public for help. His appeal focused on locating Cavalli Harriott and Jayqwan Stevens-Burke so detectives could progress the case.

In the Metropolitan Police’s earlier murder inquiry update, Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley said the investigation was in its early stages and that officers were working to identify those responsible. The force also said there was a large police presence in the area while investigations continued.

Why did police release images now?

Police said the images were released as part of their effort to progress the investigation and identify people they believe may be able to assist them.

The Met has previously used public appeals and CCTV or still images in other missing-person and serious-crime inquiries where officers want the public’s help to trace individuals.

In this case, the force is asking anyone who recognises the two men or knows where they are to contact police. The public appeal is designed to widen the reach of the investigation beyond the immediate scene and the local area.

How should the public respond?

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Metropolitan Police using the details provided in the appeal.

The force has also previously advised callers in related Hackney inquiries to use 101 and, where appropriate, Crimestoppers for anonymous information.

Police have not released further details in the latest statement about the circumstances of the stabbing, and the investigation remains ongoing. The Met has emphasised that it continues to build a picture of events before and after the attack.

Background of the development

Hackney has seen repeated police appeals in relation to serious violence and missing-person cases, with officers often using public-facing requests to identify people or gather evidence.

In this case, the latest release of images follows the fatal stabbing of a 23-year-old man on Andre Street on 13 July, which prompted a murder investigation.

The Met’s earlier statements indicate that detectives believe the suspects ran from the scene and that enquiries have continued since the incident.

The release of names and images suggests investigators are now trying to advance the case by identifying and locating the two men they wish to speak to.

Prediction

For residents in Hackney, the immediate effect is likely to be a continued police presence and further public appeals for information as detectives try to move the case forward.

For people living or working near Andre Street, the investigation may heighten concern about safety in the area while officers trace those involved.

For the wider community, the case may also encourage witnesses to come forward if they have seen the men or know where they are, which could help police establish the sequence of events.

The outcome of the appeal will depend on whether the public can provide information that leads detectives to the two men or adds new evidence to the inquiry.
