A woman in her 30s has died following a stabbing at a home in Tower Hamlets, east London, prompting a murder investigation and two arrests, Metropolitan Police confirmed.

What happened in Tower Hamlets during the early hours of Sunday?

Emergency services were called at approximately 1:17am on Sunday, 15 September 2024, to an address on Duckett Street in Tower Hamlets. Metropolitan Police officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service to find a woman suffering from stab wounds.

Despite efforts from paramedics, the woman—believed to be in her 30s—was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.

Who has been arrested and what are the charges?

The Metropolitan Police arrested a 32-year-old woman at the scene on suspicion of murder. In addition, a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both individuals remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Detectives have confirmed that those involved were acquainted with each other and had been present at the property on the evening prior to the incident.

What are investigators saying about the incident?

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Ben Dalloway, leading the investigation with the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said:

“This is a tragic incident which has resulted in a young woman losing her life.
Those involved appear to be known to each other and were present at the address during the course of the evening.
While this investigation is in its early stages, we have made significant progress and arrested two people.
At this time, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

He added that officers will continue to carry out “vital work at the location” and requested patience from residents. He also urged anyone with information to come forward.

How is the local police force responding?

Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney expressed condolences and reiterated the commitment to understanding what took place:

“My thoughts are with the family of this young woman at this very difficult time.
Following this awful incident, my officers are working closely with our specialist colleagues to understand exactly what has occurred.”

He assured residents that police would be visible in the area over the coming days:

“Local officers will be in and around Duckett Street to provide any reassurance that the community needs but also as an opportunity for anyone with concerns, or any information about this incident, to speak with us.”
