Where and when did the East London shooting happen?

The incident occurred shortly before 10am on Friday morning in Vincent, a suburb of East London. According to Colonel Priscilla Naidu, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, the 70-year-old attorney was approaching his office when he was attacked.

What do we know about the attorney’s condition?

The attorney suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was rushed to hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. Police have not yet released further details about his condition.

How did the suspects flee the scene?

Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed that the suspects fled in a silver Mercedes Benz immediately after the shooting. No descriptions of the suspects have been provided at this stage.

What is the motive behind the attack?

The motive remains unclear. Police stated that the reason for the attack is “subject to an ongoing investigation”. Officers are working to establish whether the shooting was targeted or connected to any of the victim’s professional dealings.

Have any arrests been made?

As of now, no arrests have been made. Police have opened a case of attempted murder and are actively pursuing leads. They have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or visit their nearest police station.

Was there a similar recent incident?

In an unrelated case, a Durban-based lawyer was shot and killed in what police described as an apparent drive-by shooting. The lawyer, seated in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother, was attacked while both their wives were seated in the back. The shooting occurred when a VW Polo pulled alongside their vehicle at a traffic light and opened fire. The Durban attorney died shortly after arriving at the hospital, while his brother survived.
