The incident unfolded at approximately 7.30am on Thursday, 17 April 2025, when layers of wood and metal scaffolding attached to a closed public library gave way, sending debris crashing onto Stoke Newington Church Street.

A man inside a car was reportedly trapped under the collapsed structure but was rescued with the help of quick-thinking bystanders. Remarkably, he did not suffer serious injuries.

What happened during the Stoke Newington scaffolding collapse?

According to witnesses, the scaffolding bent before it tipped over and collapsed with a loud bang onto the street. Ali Alagoz, who was nearby when the incident occurred, described the terrifying scene.

Speaking to Metro, Mr Alagoz said: “The scaffold bent over and then slowly tipped and then there was a loud bang. I tried to help the man out of the car, I thought he would be crushed but he was okay. It was shocking for the few seconds watching it – it felt like minutes. We were both lucky to be alive.”

Photos from the scene show a substantial mass of wood and metal strewn across the street, blocking the busy roadway and causing disruption to early morning traffic.

Was anyone injured in the Stoke Newington scaffolding incident?

Despite the severity of the collapse, there were no reports of serious injuries. The man trapped inside the car was successfully pulled to safety by members of the public before emergency services arrived.

Authorities are expected to carry out investigations to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure the safety of other structures in the area.

What is the current situation at Stoke Newington Church Street?

Stoke Newington Church Street remained partially cordoned off on Thursday morning as emergency crews assessed the damage and cleared debris from the road. Commuters and local residents were advised to avoid the area where possible.

Further information regarding the safety of the closed public library building and future measures is expected to be released by Hackney Council or the relevant construction authorities.
