North Ockendon, Essex — Local residents and campaigners have announced a community fundraising event aimed at protecting the Green Belt in North Ockendon from a proposed large-scale data centre development at East Havering, right alongside the borders of Thurrock and Brentwood in Essex.
The “Spring BBQ” event, taking place on Saturday 9 May at 2:00 PM, will be held at Top Meadow Golf and Country Club, Fen Lane, North Ockendon (RM14 3PR). The event is being organised in support of the Protect the Green Belt (North Ockendon Alliance) campaign, which is working to oppose plans for a mega data centre that campaigners say threatens local countryside, wildlife habitats, and community character.
The family-friendly afternoon will feature food (included in the ticket price), a raffle, and a bar, bringing together residents, families, and supporters for a day of community action and fundraising. All proceeds from the event will go directly toward campaign efforts to safeguard the Green Belt.
Event Details:
- Date: Saturday 9 May
- Time: 2:00 PM
- Location: Top Meadow Golf and Country Club, Fen Lane, North Ockendon, RM14 3PR
- Tickets: £20 per adult, £10 for under 16s, free for under 5s (INCLUDES FOOD)
- Extras: All ticket holders will be entered into a prize draw to win a meal for four at Top Meadow
Organisers say the event is not only about raising funds but also about raising awareness of the environmental and community impact of the proposed development.
A spokesperson for the campaign said:
“Our Green Belt is a vital part of our local identity — it provides open space, supports biodiversity, and offers a natural buffer for our communities. This proposed mega data centre risks permanently altering that landscape. The Spring BBQ is a chance for people to come together, show support, and help us protect what matters.”
The proposed East Havering data centre has sparked growing concern among residents in North Ockendon and the wider Upminster area, with campaigners urging decision-makers to prioritise sustainable development and preservation of protected land.
