In a significant step towards Newham’s greener future, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE participated in a tree planting event in Silvertown, where 200 new trees were planted along North Woolwich Road. The planting, which forms part of the Royal Docks Corridor project, is a key part of Newham’s broader commitment to tackle air pollution and provide healthier, greener spaces for local residents.

Why is tree planting so important for Newham’s air quality?

The Mayor highlighted that Newham is currently facing some of the highest levels of toxic traffic pollution in the country. As a result, the borough has the highest number of premature deaths in England linked to poor air quality. This includes the alarming figure of 96 deaths annually and the highest rates of asthma-related hospital admissions among children in the capital.

“Greener streets are healthier streets,” said Fiaz, underscoring the importance of planting more trees to combat the harmful effects of traffic pollution. The new trees planted in the borough will help absorb pollutants, reduce traffic-related emissions, and make the streets more pleasant for residents.

What impact will these initiatives have on local communities?

In addition to improving air quality, the tree planting project is designed to make streets in Newham more welcoming and vibrant. Mayor Fiaz emphasised that such efforts not only help the environment but also benefit the well-being of residents. The borough’s pocket forest initiatives, as well as the planting of street trees, are designed to improve local green spaces and combat health inequalities. These trees are particularly important for young children, who are most vulnerable to the impacts of poor air quality.

What are other green initiatives underway in Newham?

Mayor Fiaz outlined several other green initiatives aimed at making Newham a healthier and more sustainable place to live. Over the past few months, the borough has invested £500,000 in pocket forest planting projects across eight schools, Gooseley Playing Fields, and Newham Hospital. In addition, the borough has been working towards decarbonisation, with confirmed grants to remove gas usage at schools and libraries. Newham is also developing Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Healthy School Streets, and Zero Emission Neighbourhoods funded through its Carbon Offset Fund.

Moreover, Beckton Meadows, which features over two acres of resident-planted wildflowers and grasses, has recently been formally opened. This green space includes a Butterfly Garden and the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Pathway, further enhancing the area’s biodiversity and offering a natural escape for residents.

What does Mayor Fiaz promise for the future of Newham’s air quality and green spaces?

This recent tree planting event marks just the beginning of Newham’s ongoing commitment to tackling air pollution. The Mayor affirmed that the efforts are part of a larger Air Quality Action Plan, with further initiatives to be announced soon. The ongoing projects aim to create a cleaner, greener Newham, ensuring that future generations can enjoy better air quality and improved health outcomes.

In closing, Mayor Fiaz remarked, “This isn’t the end. We will be making more announcements on how we aim to tackle air pollution and improve green spaces in Newham soon.”
