A man has been jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering his friend in a violent attack in Redbridge.

Marius Ziugzda, 48, of no fixed address, was sentenced on Thursday, 13 February, at Wood Green Crown Court. He will serve a minimum of 18 years for the murder of 60-year-old Brian Shields, which took place on 20 October 2022.

What led to the murder of Brian Shields?

Brian Shields and Ziugzda were known to each other and had been staying at a disused pavilion in Orchard Playing Fields, formerly Goodmayes Park Extension. On the morning of 20 October 2022, emergency services were called at 11:14 AM after reports of an unresponsive man. Despite their efforts, Shields was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that he had suffered blunt force trauma to the head and chest, injuries consistent with multiple punches or kicks.

What did Ziugzda say at the scene?

Ziugzda approached the police cordon despite being told not to enter the area. He then voluntarily spoke to officers, claiming that he had been with Shields the night before and had woken up to find him dead. During this conversation, he made a statement that raised suspicions, saying:

“I killed him today, I don’t know what…” followed by something incomprehensible before adding, “my friend, in the morning I killed him, now…”

How did forensic evidence contradict Ziugzda’s claims?

During police interviews, Ziugzda stated that he and Shields had arrived at the pavilion around 8:00 PM on 19 October 2022. He claimed that he left briefly to get water from a local shop and returned to find Shields uninjured. He insisted that they had sat together drinking and smoking before he fell asleep.

However, CCTV footage from nearby shops showed Ziugzda purchasing water and alcohol with visible red stains on his trousers. Forensic analysis later confirmed the stains as Shields’ blood, directly contradicting Ziugzda’s version of events.

Additionally, witness statements revealed that loud, aggressive shouting between two male voices was heard near the pavilion around 11:00 PM on the night of the murder.

How was Ziugzda charged and convicted?

With mounting evidence, Ziugzda was arrested and charged with murder on 23 October 2022. A two-week trial at Wood Green Crown Court led to his conviction on 17 January 2025.

Detective Sergeant David Brooks from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command praised the investigative efforts, stating:

“Despite Ziugzda’s claims that he and Brian were friends, he subjected him to a sustained and ultimately fatal attack. This verdict is a testament to the hard work of the investigation team, the numerous witnesses who came forward, and the efforts of the wider police team.”

What does this conviction mean for the community?

The case highlights the importance of forensic evidence and witness testimony in securing justice. Redbridge residents have been reassured by the swift and thorough police investigation leading to Ziugzda’s conviction.

The sentencing of Marius Ziugzda ensures that he will serve significant jail time for his violent crime, bringing some closure to the family and friends of Brian Shields.
