Why did police stop the Rolls-Royce?

Tower Hamlets Police officers noticed the black Rolls-Royce Ghost V12 on Stepney Way, near the old Royal London Hospital outpatients department, on Thursday. The high-end vehicle’s matte black finish and personalised number plate stood out, leading officers to conduct a routine stop.

Upon speaking to the driver, police discovered they had only a provisional licence and no insurance—a serious offence under UK road laws.

What happened to the car and the driver?

The 2012 Rolls-Royce was immediately seized and loaded onto a police tow truck, as shown in photos shared by Tower Hamlets Police on social media.

The force confirmed:

“One rather expensive car off to the pound and driver off to court.”

The driver now faces legal action for driving without proper insurance and a full licence.

What do we know about the Rolls-Royce?

  • The Rolls-Royce Ghost V12 is a luxury vehicle first introduced in 1906.
  • This particular model is from 2012, featuring a powerful V12 engine.
  • It is taxed until April 2024 and has an MOT valid until November 2024.
  • The front grill had a dent upon closer inspection.
  • The car meets ULEZ emissions standards.

How have people reacted to the incident?

Many social media users expressed shock that a driver without a full licence or insurance was operating such an expensive vehicle.

One user commented:

“Next, look into how they were able to afford that car.”

Another remarked:

“Driving a motor like that on a provisional and no insurance in and around that area is just madness!”

Others were sceptical about whether the driver would face serious consequences, with one stating:

“They’ll worm their way out of it like every other wealthy person.”

Another user pointed out the risks in an era of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), saying:

“Solo driving on a provisional and no insurance in ANPR’s day and age is insane.”

What happens next?

The driver will now face court proceedings, where penalties could include:

  • Fines
  • Driving ban
  • Points on their licence
  • Seizure of the vehicle

Tower Hamlets Police have not disclosed the driver’s identity, but the case has ignited public debate over luxury car ownership and road safety enforcement.
