Wheel alignment is one of those maintenance areas that rarely announces itself dramatically. Unlike a flat tyre or a warning light, misalignment tends to develop gradually and because the changes happen slowly, many drivers adapt to them without realising the car is no longer handling as it should.

Understanding the signs makes it considerably easier to catch alignment issues early, before they begin affecting tyre wear and driving behaviour in more significant ways. Rather than waiting for uneven tyre wear to become more noticeable, many drivers book a wheel alignment through Dexel Tyre & Auto Centre. Here are four signs worth paying attention to.

The Car Pulls to One Side

This is one of the most common and recognisable signs of a wheel alignment problem. On a flat, straight road, a correctly aligned car should travel in a straight line with minimal steering input. If the vehicle consistently drifts or pulls to one side requiring constant small corrections to maintain direction, the alignment is likely off.

It is worth distinguishing this from the natural camber of road surfaces that can lead to a slight drift on some roads. A more telling indicator is when the pull is consistent no matter which lane or side of the road you are driving in. That kind of constant directional pull is a sure sign of having the alignment checked.

The Steering Wheel Sits Off-Centre

If a steering wheel is visibly off-centre when driving straight, tilted slightly to the left or right rather than sitting level, it is a reliable indicator of alignment issues. This occurs when the wheels are not pointed exactly the same way causing the steering to compensate in a way that becomes visible in the wheel’s resting position.

Some drivers only notice this when they consciously look at the steering wheel, others notice it gradually. That’s not something that corrects itself over time, either way. A professional alignment check will locate precisely which angles have moved from specification and re-align the steering wheel to its correct centre position.

Uneven or Accelerated Tyre Wear

Tyres wear unevenly for a number of reasons, but wheel misalignment is one of the most common causes. If the wheels are out of alignment, some of the tyre tread will touch the road surface more than it should, so one edge wears away much faster than the other.

This type of wear pattern is often referred to as feathering, where the tread blocks feel smooth on one side and sharp on the other, or one-sided wear, where the inner or outer edge of the tyre is significantly more worn. Checking tyre for unusual wear patterns every few weeks can catch alignment issues before they cut tyre life short significantly. Replacing tyres without first correcting the alignment means the same wear pattern will repeat on the new set.

Vibration Through the Steering Wheel

Steering wheel vibration at certain speeds can have several causes, including unbalanced wheels or worn suspension components, but misalignment is a contributing factor in many cases. When wheels are not properly aligned, they can create uneven forces that translate into vibration, particularly noticeable on motorways or during sustained driving at higher speeds.

If the vibration is somewhat recent, getting worse as time passes or is accompanied by other signs such as pulling or uneven tyre wear, then alignment is a reasonable first place to start, along with a general suspension and wheel balance check.

A wheel alignment is a quick and relatively inexpensive service that will protect tyre life, improve fuel efficiency and keep your car handling predictably. It’s much more cost-effective to deal with it when the early signs show, than to wait until tyre wear has developed or handling has noticeably deteriorated.
