This week sees the opening of three new exhibitions at Tower Hamlet’s Whitechapel Gallery. The hub for contemporary art in the East End presents the work of Joy Gregory and Candice Lin, with the exhibitions running from 8 October to 1 March.
Joy Gregory: Catching Flies with Honey
Spanning forty-years of work, this exhibition is a celebration of Joy Gregory’s art, and the first major survey show of the artist. Expect over 250 works from photography and film to installations and textiles exploring race, history, identity, gender and beauty. The British artist challenged power structures and encouraged deeper conversations around the look of Black and feminist art. Throughout her career, Gregory has received numerous awards and has had her work exhibited all over the world. This exhibition stands to be nothing short of a tribute to her and her impact on photography as we know it today. Joy Gregory: Fierce and Fearless
Enjoy free entry to this interactive installation, a hub for participation and activity for schools, communities and university groups. Visitors will step into a tent, printed with stories of women from folklore, myths and legends. Gregory aims to celebrate these stories, so often forgotten in folklore history.
Candice Lin: g/hosti
Another exhibition offering free entry, Candice Lin’s immersive labyrinth of painted cardboard panels, showcasing a world populated by animals and other creatures. The exhibition reflects on childhood but also touches on more sinister aspects lurking in the space. The artist uses her medium to comment on the contemporary and historical political scene.
