Book lovers in East London are set to enjoy a unique literary experience as Amazon’s Kindle Storyteller Award launches the UK’s first open-air library dedicated entirely to self-published authors. The free pop-up event will transform Victoria Park into an outdoor reading space, celebrating independent writers and encouraging more people to discover books beyond traditional publishing.
The outdoor library will showcase a carefully curated collection of titles from previous finalists and winners of the Kindle Storyteller Award, Amazon’s annual competition recognising outstanding self published books. Visitors will be able to browse, read and borrow books while relaxing in one of East London’s most popular green spaces.
The initiative forms part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Kindle Storyteller Award, which has become one of the UK’s most prestigious prizes for independent authors. Since launching in 2016, the competition has helped many writers gain national recognition, publishing opportunities and new readers through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform.
Scheduled to take place in Victoria Park on 31 July and 1 August, the temporary library aims to recreate the relaxing atmosphere of a traditional library while bringing books into an open public setting. Comfortable seating, greenery and community spaces will encourage visitors to spend time reading outdoors during the summer.
Unlike conventional libraries, every book on display has been written by a self-published author. Organisers hope the event will highlight the growing quality and diversity of independently published literature, covering genres including crime, romance, fantasy, memoirs, historical fiction and non fiction.
The Kindle Storyteller Award has become an important platform for emerging writers who choose to publish independently rather than through traditional publishing houses. The annual winner receives a £20,000 cash prize, while finalists gain significant exposure among readers across the UK. In its 10th year, the award continues to attract thousands of submissions from both debut and established authors.
East London was selected as the location for the first outdoor library because of its strong creative community and vibrant literary culture. Victoria Park regularly hosts cultural festivals, markets and community events, making it an ideal setting to introduce a more accessible way of enjoying books outside conventional library buildings.
The organisers hope the event will inspire more people to discover independent authors while encouraging visitors to spend time reading in public spaces. The concept also reflects growing interest in combining literature with outdoor experiences, particularly during the summer months when parks become important community gathering places.
The initiative arrives as physical reading experiences continue to evolve alongside digital publishing. While Kindle is best known for e-books, the outdoor library demonstrates how digital publishing can also encourage face-to-face community engagement and introduce readers to authors they may not otherwise discover.
Visitors attending the pop-up library will also learn more about self-publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing, which has enabled thousands of writers to publish their work independently without securing traditional publishing contracts. The platform has become an increasingly important route into the publishing industry for aspiring authors.
For East London residents, the event offers an opportunity to enjoy free books, celebrate local creativity and experience an innovative twist on the traditional library. Organisers hope the success of the Victoria Park installation could pave the way for similar outdoor libraries in other UK cities.
As independent publishing continues to grow, initiatives like the Kindle Storyteller Award’s outdoor library demonstrate how literature can be made more accessible, helping connect readers, writers and communities in new and imaginative ways.
