Police responded to reports of a group of approximately eight to ten males fighting inside the Primark store. The fight reportedly involved weapons, though the specific types have not been disclosed. The incident took place during a busy period when the store and the wider shopping centre were crowded with shoppers.

Who was involved in the fight at Primark?

How have the police reacted to the incident?

The Metropolitan Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist with identifying those responsible for the fight. The spokesperson said:

“Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident in Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford on Thursday May 1st to come forward. How common are large group fights with weapons in East London?

East London has seen repeated incidents of large group fights involving weapons, frequently linked to gang activity, social deprivation, and youth violence. Such violent clashes often include knives and firearms, heightening public safety concerns.

Recent data shows East London has an annual crime rate of roughly 33 crimes per 1,000 people, with violent crime comprising nearly 22% of those offences. Although violent crime has decreased slightly by 4.8% year-over-year from April 2024 to March 2025, weapon-related violence remains a pressing issue.

Efforts by the Metropolitan Police to combat gang violence have evolved, moving from the Gangs Violence Matrix to a Violence Harm Assessment model to better target the most harmful individuals. Despite reductions in firearm discharges, weapon offenses, especially those involving knives, persist in many deprived areas of London.
