Several wildfires have broken out across East London, prompting a major response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) as firefighters tackled large grass fires in Hornchurch and Rainham during one of the hottest and driest periods of the summer. The incidents highlight the growing wildfire risk facing London as prolonged heat and drought leave grassland and open spaces highly vulnerable to fire.

The most significant blaze erupted near South End Road in Hornchurch, where dramatic images showed flames rapidly spreading across dry grassland. At the height of the incident, around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines were deployed to bring the fire under control. London Fire Brigade also sent one of its specialist Terrain Support Vehicles, allowing crews to transport firefighting equipment across difficult off-road terrain.

Meanwhile, another major grass fire burned through open land in Rainham, destroying a substantial area of vegetation. Firefighters worked for several hours to prevent the flames from spreading further as dry conditions and gusting winds created challenging firefighting conditions.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident. However, the fires generated thick smoke visible across parts of Havering, prompting authorities to advise residents to avoid affected areas and keep windows and doors closed if smoke drifted into nearby neighbourhoods.

Extreme weather increases wildfire risk

The fires come after weeks of exceptionally hot weather across southern England, with much of the region officially declared to be in drought. Dry vegetation has created ideal conditions for grass fires, placing increasing pressure on emergency services.

London Fire Brigade says the capital has experienced a sharp rise in wildfire-related incidents during the recent heatwave, with firefighters responding to multiple grass fires across East London, including Rainham, Dagenham, Walthamstow and Hornchurch.

Fire brigade issues public warning

Following the latest incidents, London Fire Brigade urged residents to take extra precautions to help prevent further fires.

The Brigade advised the public to:

  • Avoid using disposable barbecues in parks or open countryside.
  • Dispose of cigarettes safely and never throw lit cigarette ends onto dry grass.
  • Take litter home, particularly glass bottles, which can intensify heat in dry conditions.
  • Report fires immediately by calling 999.

Officials warned that even small ignition sources can quickly develop into fast-moving grass fires during periods of prolonged hot and dry weather.

East London particularly vulnerable

Areas such as Hornchurch Country Park, Rainham Marshes and surrounding open spaces contain extensive grassland and nature reserves that become increasingly susceptible to wildfire during prolonged dry spells. The combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds can cause fires to spread rapidly across large areas of vegetation.

The latest incidents also follow a series of significant grass fires attended by London Fire Brigade across Havering during recent weeks, underlining the growing challenge posed by increasingly frequent periods of extreme summer weather.

Climate conditions driving more wildfires

Environmental experts have warned that hotter summers and prolonged droughts are increasing the likelihood of wildfires across the UK. Large fires have already affected several parts of England this summer, with emergency services battling blazes in both urban parks and protected countryside.

Although the Hornchurch and Rainham fires were successfully contained, London Fire Brigade continues to monitor conditions closely as forecasts suggest warm, dry weather could persist.

Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could accidentally ignite dry vegetation, helping reduce the risk of further wildfires across East London during the remainder of the summer.
