A 16-year-old boy has died after suffering critical injuries in a collision involving a car in Lewisham, South London, prompting police to launch an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage as investigators work to establish exactly what happened.
Emergency services were called to Manor Lane at approximately 2:22pm on Thursday, July 9, following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. Police officers, paramedics and other emergency responders attended the scene, where the teenager received immediate medical treatment before being transported to hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the boy succumbed to his injuries three days later, passing away on Sunday, July 12. His death has left family members devastated, and the Metropolitan Police confirmed that specialist officers are continuing to support his relatives during the investigation.
The incident has triggered a full collision inquiry led by detectives from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command. Officers are now piecing together the events leading up to the fatal crash and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or captured footage in the area to come forward.
An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and drug driving. He has since been released on police bail while detectives continue their enquiries. No charges have been brought at this stage, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Police are particularly interested in locating anyone who saw a white Range Rover Evoque travelling in or around Manor Lane before the collision occurred. Investigators believe dashcam recordings from motorists driving through the area could prove crucial in helping establish the vehicle’s movements and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detective Sergeant Rob Harris, who is leading the investigation, expressed his condolences to the victim’s family while urging members of the public to assist officers.
“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family following this heartbreaking incident,” he said.
“My team and I continue to work at pace to understand what happened. As we build a picture of the circumstances, we are keen to hear from any witnesses—particularly those with dashcam footage— who saw a white Range Rover Evoque in or around Manor Lane on the day of the incident.”
Road traffic investigators are expected to examine forensic evidence from the scene alongside CCTV footage, vehicle data and witness statements as they seek to determine the precise sequence of events.
Fatal road collisions involving young pedestrians continue to be a major concern across London, with road safety organisations regularly urging motorists to remain vigilant, particularly in residential areas where children and teenagers may be crossing roads or walking near traffic.
The latest tragedy serves as another reminder of the devastating consequences serious collisions can have on families and local communities. While detectives continue their investigation, police are urging anyone who may hold even a small piece of information to come forward, stressing that seemingly minor details can play an important role in establishing the facts.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant dashcam footage from Manor Lane or nearby roads on July 9 is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police by calling 101, quoting reference 4919/9JUL. Information can also be shared anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers.
As enquiries continue, officers hope additional evidence from the public will help provide answers for the teenager’s grieving family and ensure a full understanding of the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
